Oblivion of Students Is a Problem That Have a Solution
The Glorify Allah (the Lord) created the
human being with innate oblivion and instructed us to seek help from Him to
avoid it.
Fixed Evidences:
80% from what you read without the intention
of keeping it in the memory fades out after 28 days from reading.
90% of what you hear vanish out from memory
after 14 days from hearing.
90% of oblivion is a result of inefficiency
in memorizing method.
Types of memories:
The memory is divided in terms of strength
into the following:
The Golden Memory:
It is a strong, long lasting memory that
stores only organized and classified matters for a long period.
Mercuric Memory:
This type of memory do not loses quickly the
big incidents of joy or terror and have the nature of “mercury” that it not
easy to catch.
The Evaporative Memory:
It is a short term memory which leaks out
events quickly and it is used, for instance, in viewing natural sceneries or in
short discussion.
Any how your way for success depends on
filling up your golden memory. The first step towards this goal, is the ability
to concentrate and push the information into the golden long term memory.
There is also another classification for
memory types as follows:
Self Memory:
This memory deals with the materials which
must be used immediately and the brain delete them quickly.
Short-term Memory:
Concentration is essential for this type of
memory. If we read or hear a telephone number or important word it is kept in
the memory and we can remember such number or word for some moments only.
Long-term Memory:
This memory processes more complicated
operations. It records information and gives due time for storing it for
retrieval when needed. This memory is capable of storing a big magnitude of
information for long periods extending to some years. The information in this
memory is less vulnerable for interference with new inputs of the short term
memory.
Remote Memory:
This memory stores the basic unforgettable
information in the normal situations, such as our names or names of our close
friends or (Sura) chapter from the Holly Quran which we had memorized at early
ages. This memory is as solid as the rock that its content never vanishes
easily.
Enemies of Memory:
The first enemy: Non-Usage:
If a certain information is not used or
retrieved for a certain period of time, it will be impossible to remember it
due to the gradual weakness that occurs in nerve passages between the nerve
cells. Consequently as a result of non-usage the information will be lost.
The second enemy: Absence of Mind:
Absence of mind is one sort of failure in
concentrating attention. Normally this situation happens when we engage
ourselves with other things or daydreaming. Always try to resist absence of
mind by concentrating on the lesson and taking part effectively with the other
student during learning.
To get rid of the above-mentioned enemies you
must stick to the following:
Good understanding that enables you to
explain the subject in your own style.
Comprehensive analysis by considering
yourself fully know the subject.
Link the information with other data you have
acquired in the same course or others or from life experience. For instance,
you may study astronomy information in connection with what you have read in
Quran about the sun, moon, heaven and the earth.
In order to master the above-mentioned three
steps (understanding, analyzing, linking), hereunder are ten principals for
dealing with memory:
The stimulatory concern: the real desire for
learning is an actual incentive for quick understanding, while the absence of
such desire makes learning very difficult.
Selection: the insistence to memorize each
word, leads normally to memorize none. Therefore, you have to select the words
that you need to memorize and send them to the sustainable memory.
Determination for memorizing: for example,
you may sit long hours to make your brother memorize a poetry and read it with
him ten times. At the end your brother will memorize it while you don’t. this
is because your brother is determined to memorize while you don’t.
Background of basic information; reading of
newspapers, magazines and going to libraries is not a waste of time because
such activities enrich your language and your general information.
Arranged expression: always try to arrange
your information in a logical manner to retrieve them easily. The other
alternative could be reading the subject till memorizing. This alternative is
boredom and time consuming, but unfortunately almost all students use this
method.
Recitation: is the most successful method for
conveying information to the permanent memory. If you recite the information
for yourself or for others in your own style, this will harness the information
into the memory and gives you more confidence that you have understood the
topic.
Time for access to the memory: the
information needs five seconds and fifteen minutes to reach safely to the
memory. For fixing the information into the memory, you need to recite it or
write it down immediately after receiving such information in order to store
into the brain nerve centers.
Distributed training: it is recommended to
take rest intervals of five minutes after each period of not more than 55
minutes of studying. This method generates more benefits because of the
following four reasons:
Alleviates the physical and psychological
stress.
Provides more incentives when limited time is
assigned for one mission.
Lessens boredom when studying an
uninteresting subject.
The rest interval is good for storing what
you have studied in the memory.
Visual expression: deals with the half of the
brain capacity and includes figures and words while the other half deals with
the pictures. If you store figures and words, this means you are using only
half of the brain capacity. Therefore, always try to transform the information
into words and drawings.
Linkage and association: you have to boost
the relation between the new and the already stored information into the memory
in order to create a “magnetic force” that puts together the new
information with others and so on.
The student is a human being and may make
mistakes or forgets and the increasing oblivion could be attributed to the
following reasons:
The mental and physical stress due to burdens
and responsibilities and such alike.
Increasing social, sustenance and scientific
duties and problems beside other mattes. “Events normally remove out others”.
Abandoning studying and reviewing the lessons
for a long period due to disregard of the plan and program.
Several similarities and interferences
between the subjects.
Lack of good understanding and concentration
as a result of several reasons including rush, recklessness and unrestraint.
Some topics are forgettable by nature. In
addition committing guilt, sins and becoming tough hearted.
To remedy the problem of oblivion, you have
to abide by the following:
Seek refuge with God All Mighty and increase
supplication to Him “Ask He Who returns back those who went astray to take
you by His strength to the straight way”
Reconciliation with the God All Mighty,
through more supplication to Him for forgiveness and repentance beside more
worships.
Entertainment by the legal acceptable means
to avoid toughening the heart
Use notes, summaries and other learning
methods which help in recalling the stored subjects. Also use the method of
writing summaries while studying. “what you have memorized could vanish but
what you write remains in mind”.
Hereunder are some other advices:
Don’t study while you are tired because you
cannot fix information in your mind.
Many students do not organize studying and
memorize without taking intervals. Therefore, information interferes with each
other and become distorted.
Repeated memorizing and review in different
periods help in fixing information in the memory.
The unstable mental condition causes
oblivion. Therefore get rid of your problems first by first to keep yourself
stable.
Concentration and attention are key factors
for resisting oblivion.
Abandonment and negligence are main reasons
for oblivion and weak memory.
Finally avoid guilt and sins to avoid
oblivion.
Imam Al Shafie Said:
I complained about my bad luck in
memorizing to a Wiseman. He advised me to abandon sins.
He told me that knowledge is a light and
God’s light is never granted to disobedient.
